This weekend we talked about the use of active money management as a way to wade through the uncertainty in today’s volatile stock market. Chuck refers to a study done by independent analyst Gary Fritz that states if you bought an S&P 500 index fund in 1990 and were not in the fund during the 20 worst weeks from 1990-2010 your results would be a positive 1,737%. Even more astounding would be that if you were not in the market during both the 20 best weeks and its 20 worst weeks you’d be up 380% If you bought and held the fund you would be up 280%. Active money management seeks to protect your investments by moving out of the market when market conditions deteriorate and move in when it becomes technically right to do so. In this segment Chuck talks to a caller Chris about active money management and how our partner Strategic Equity Management uses this technique to protect peoples principle investment.

Being in the financial planning industry poses many hurdles when trying to explain the benefits of a product that is being slammed in highly read publications like Money Magazine. Money wrote an article in January of this year titled “Indexed Annuities are a Safety Trap”. They write about their concerns over the sales practices of insurance agents and how the returns in these annuities are less than stellar. In this episode of Money Matters we cite a study done by Geoffrey VanderPal, D.B.A, CFP, CLU, CFS, RFC; Jack Marrion; and David F. Babbel, Phd where they take a closer look at the returns of indexed annuities. The results may surprise the readers and Lisa Gibbs of Money Magazine.
